Advice For Building A Raised Bed In Your Garden

Most people enjoy sitting in their gardens and even using them to grow their own vegetables. Unfortunately many of us live in areas where the soil conditions are less than suitable for growing either of these sorts of plants. Years of compression on the soil from people walking and building on it often leave it too compacted down and it takes a lot of work to rectify this. Installing raised beds can help to make any garden look great in an easy and cost effective manner.

A raised bed is essentially an elevated container that holds soil. Raised beds are flexible when it comes to their shape and size making them the perfect fit for any garden. Another great thing about a raised garden bed is that you can have one that is permanently fixed to the ground using concrete or wood or you can have one that can be moved if necessary.

Whether you are choosing to grow vegetables and herbs or just flowers then a raised bed will be a good solution. The reason for this is that the soil is more porous as it isn’t likely to be walked over so it lets more water through. If you decide to grow flowers in a raised bed then they will gain a large amount of these nutrients from the soil which will produce the sort of flowers you can buy from a flowershop or garden centre.

When growing your own vegetables in a raised bed you will benefit from the composition of the soil. The combination of drainage materials, compost and topsoil give vegetables the perfect growing conditions. The amount of control that a raised bed allows in terms of growing environment makes growing your own vegetables so much easier. This allows you to remove weeds as soon as they appear and you can also plant companion herbs and vegetables to control insects.

There are a few simple things that you can do should you decide to install a raised garden bed that will help you to get the best results from your seeds. Your raised garden bed is going to need to be positioned somewhere where it can get plenty of sunshine. You want to try and position the bed so that it is facing north so that it gets the maximum amount of sunlight. You will find that raised beds can become dried out quickly so you need to monitor the level of moisture of the soil. To prevent the bed drying out you ideally want to be watering it in the morning and the early evening. If you create channels between a row of vegetables then this will help to prevent flooding by channeling water out of these areas.
